Jarvie U – Introduction

Written on January 2, 2010 Posted in JarvieU, Uncategorized

You’re doing what jarvie?
Since no one else is doing it, I’ll volunteer. haha

JDigital University-
almost like a typical internship, but with lots more learning and focus.
almost like a photography school, but with the ability to avoid the high costs and the ability to focus more on the individual.

Does it take a measure of Faith that JarvieU will be worth the time you put into it? YES
And I will do my best to offer this great opportunity to those I think will succeed.

Who’s it for?

If you’re really interested in photography. (And want to be very educated and progress rapidly)
3 of the 4 options require a decent amount of time each month.

  • Marketing Promotion. Your name on websites and blogs. First response on job referrals.
  • Job promotion – many photographers are searching for a highly trained editors who don’t have to be trained thoroughly and can save them time and do the job right.
Most are wanting to start their own businesses, but if this is of interest it’s doable.

HOW THIS STARTED

I believe editing and a solid photo-workflow is an important and vital part of a Photography Business.
Having spent thousands and thousands of hours editing and furthering the effeciency of my workflow on hundreds of thousands of pictures.
I feel like I have something to share.
I felt I could train others these valuable tools even to the point they’d be able to teach others in return.

Training one individual has proved to not be an effecient use of my time beyond the joy of teaching.
So the decision has now become teach a lot of people.

For the longest time like many photographers I thought I could never let go of my editing.
I then had someone insist they wanted to be an intern for the summer.
As the summer progressed I saw that I could teach quite a bit of the editing process and feel comfortable.
So I saw it was possible and even beneficial.
Starting small at what you let an intern work with.

Every person I’ve trained and worked with I’ve learned more about what they’re searching for and how I can help and how to create a Win-Win situation.
How to create an environment where they’d really learn keys to excel as a photographer.
I’m sure I’ll continue to learn more and improve in this area.
I could wait until I was amazing to go into something so large scale but since no one else is doing anything like it… might as well give it a go and we’ll all be a part of starting something new.

I believe what I’ve set it up that in the end it will save me time and I believe that it will really pay off when they get to the point that they can pay it forward
It’s at this point that the investment of time will pay off and start saving me time. (And benefiting larger amounts of people)

Simply knowing how to do it comes soon in the process of learning editing, it’s becoming efficient (fast) and good at editing that takes time, practice and qualified-input.

Pay It Forward

In addition to special classes, field trips, assisting opportunities and the other benefits

As students are trained, they share what they’ve learned what they know with the next batch of students, specially in the area of editing and photo workflow.
The Loop will help all of us… for a Win-Win-Win.
Learn to edit – Learn even more about editing by sharing what you know – Assist at the office helping with editing and work on other related photo-projects.

My role often becomes reviewer &  special instructor. To see where each person is at in the process, give goals, answer questions and give assignments.
And of course I’ll be helping to plan the special events and classes and assisting opportunities.

As you improve on your abilities you’ll take on more and more roles of paying it forward to newer students. Solidifying your knowledge by sharing.

GOALS

To learn quality and effecient photo workflows.

To get a symbolic degree from the school.

To promote the alumni of school… help them find jobs and establish their business.

The goal is Bachelor but if a student progresses above and beyond a Master’s degree is awarded.

To Qualify

If you’re confused. Just ask yourself do I have a decent amount of time each month let’s say for now at least 20hrs and do I have a strong desire to learn photography?
If so then just let me know and I’ll explain it.

Enrollment Types/Costs

Typical student-intern

Students following a typical student-intern route.
They pay a retainer fee and their internship in a sense pays the dues.
Therefore their retainer is in a sense refundable at graduation. (The fee providing another motivation for progress and getting it done… kinda like the thousands people pay at regular school)

Working student-intern

Students who can’t (or don’t want to) pay the up front fee.
They will follow a set program of classes and work
In a sense paying first for their classes through their office internships and work on projects.

Paid Students

They are a mix of Auditing students and Full time students.
They pay an entry fee* but unlike auditing students they can attain a graduation.
They do work on photography like other students but they can work exclusively on their own work.
They can also choose not to do an emphasis.
They also pay on the same events/special classes that auditing students pay.

Auditing students

For photographers not interested in a degree or assisting in the office.
They have more money than time and perhaps want more flexibility of schedule.

They pay an entry fee* into the school and some class types are included and others cost.
Pay it forward training is included.
Some limited space events they might not have first choice entry.
They can choose their own classes, go at their own pace.
They can opt out of emphasis of course since they go to what they want.

Present fee is $500

Graduation

  • A minimum level of competency (done with ratings of 1-11 in the fields of the major and the emphasis)
  • A minimum hours commitment in hours to office work
  • A minimum set of classes based on each program.
  • A minimum months in the program
  • Stay consistent on a month to month basis and not “Fail-Out”
